Wire won't feed on your MIG welder

The trigger works, but the wire stalls, stutters or will not move. Most of the time the cause is outside the case, and you can check it yourself.

What to check first

  1. Check that the drive roll matches your wire size and type. Solid wire and flux-core wire use different rolls.
  2. Check the drive roll tension. Too loose slips, too tight crushes the wire.
  3. Check that the wire spool turns freely and the brake is not too tight.
  4. Check that the contact tip matches the wire size and is not worn or clogged.
  5. Straighten the gun cable. Kinks make the wire stick.
  6. Try replacing the liner. A dirty or worn liner is a very common cause.

Safety: Turn the machine off before you change the drive roll, liner or tip.

What it usually is

  • A worn drive roll or liner
  • A failed wire feed motor
  • A bad trigger or gun
  • A control problem inside the machine
