Welder thermal fault or overheating light
The thermal light comes on and the machine stops welding. That is the machine protecting itself. The question is why it got hot.
What to check first
- Leave the machine on with the fan running for about 15 minutes. Do not turn it off while it is hot.
- Check that the fan spins. If it does not, stop and call us.
- Make sure the vents are not blocked and the machine has room around it.
- Look at your duty cycle. Welding for longer than the machine is rated for will trip it.
- Skip long or thin extension cords. Low voltage makes the machine work harder.
- In a hot or dusty shop, move the machine to cleaner, cooler air.
Safety: Do not open the case. Welders hold a dangerous charge inside even when they are unplugged.
What it usually is
- Dust and metal debris packed inside the machine
- A failed fan
- A failed temperature sensor
- A part that is wearing out and running hot
