No gas flow from your welder

You pull the trigger and no gas comes out, or the weld is full of holes. Gas problems are easy to check from the outside.

What to check first

  1. Check that the cylinder valve is open and the cylinder is not empty.
  2. Check the regulator and flow setting. For MIG the usual range is about 15 to 25 cubic feet per hour. Follow what your wire maker recommends.
  3. Check the gas hose for kinks, cuts and loose fittings.
  4. Brush soapy water on the fittings. Bubbles show a leak.
  5. Clean spatter out of the nozzle. A clogged nozzle blocks the gas.
  6. Pull the trigger and listen near the machine for a click. The click is the gas valve opening.

Safety: Keep the cylinder chained upright. Turn the cylinder valve off when you finish.

What it usually is

  • A leaking hose or fitting
  • A failed gas valve in the machine
  • A clogged nozzle or gas diffuser
  • A control problem inside the machine
